SCIRST presented us with a challenge, to achieve the functionality and features offered by Matrix Items in SuiteCommerce, without using Matrix items.

We set out to build and replicate each feature provided by the Matrix Items, by using two custom fields as the two item options possible.

Challenges

Group colors in PLP

The first challenge was to manage to group items of the same color in the PLP page, under a common parent item.

To accomplish this we created a new Non Inventory Item, that would behave as the parent for all products that share the same color.

This Non Inventory Item, has a multiple select list, where all children items are listed.

All the childen items, at the same time, link back to the item parent.

Using this link, we can simply show a single item with a color selector that links to each item’s PDP page.

Color Selection on PDP Page

The following challenge was to be able to select different colors from the PDP page.

We added a Fabric selector, to allow customers to select different colors.

This is accompanied by a dropdown that allows to switch between different sizes which are represented with a separated Non Inventory Parent Item
